Iron Man (Intro)

Recording Artist: Black Sabbath

Writers: Iommi, Osbourne, Butler, Ward.

Recorded: 1971

Probably one of the most recognized guitar riffs in Rock. This classic appeared on Sabbath’s “Paranoid” LP in 1971. The powerful guitar part marked the beginning of early metal music.

I have intentionally left out the opening string bends which require a special technique to execute. The song starts with the main power chord section. There are several different ways to play this part. Tony Iommi played it all on the 6th string, but I have chosen to teach it on the 5th string for the sack of simplicity. I have also seen it played on both the 6th and 5th strings.

Recording Artist: The Beatles

Writers: John Lennon and Paul McCartney

Guitarist: George Harrison and John Lennon

Album: Yesterday ... And Today, 1966

This great guitar intro and hook was written by John Lennon and played by George Harrison of the Beatles. It is basically a reworking of a standard blues bass line.

Song Stats:

  • Key: E major

  • Time Signature: 4/4

  • Range: Open 6th string (E) to 4h fret on the 4th string (F#).

  • Structure: Intro only.

What you need to Know

  • How to read TAB

  • Playing notes on strings 4, 5, and 6

  • Alternating picking (optional)

Practice notes:

1. Getting the correct rhythm is very important, make sure you hold first note for full value.

2. Use your fingertips on all notes except the 2nd fret on 5th and 6th strings where you flatten out the 1st finger across both strings and rock the finger back and forth

3. Try playing the exact same pattern, but starting on the fifth string. This becomes the second part of the song.
